Lifestyle instead of vacation
Traveling with the wind, also means taking your time. You can go wherever the wind takes you, though the wind will not take into account deadlines and dates. For that reason, we want to make a lifestyle out of our adventure with the boat rather than a vacation of a few weeks or months. We don’t want to be tied down. Of course, we will always have to abide by the restrictions of visas, but how nice is it when visas and weather are the only things to consider.
It sounds like a vacation; nice sailing, being outside, enjoying the weather and not having to worry about the fast-paced society that always wants everything from you. This is also indeed very nice of this lifestyle, only it is not the complete picture. When you live on a sailboat, things you used to do in an hour (or even less) now take half a day. For example, you don’t have a car to drive to the supermarket for groceries, you will have to do this walking or with your folding bike. Also, with a boat you are constantly in the middle of the elements and maintenance will have to be done regularly. A time-consuming activity. This is something you have to love and be aware of. It is also important to be able to support yourself. If you only cover your expenses with savings, there will always be an end date to the adventure. How we try to avoid this, we explain under “How to realize a boat adventure without budget or knowledge.
A lifestyle, then, and not a nice one-year vacation. You may wonder; why choose this? Why all the trouble? It is very simple. By not always choosing the easiest path, we often end up in the most beautiful adventures, meet special people and have our creativity tested. We learn at least as much as we used to in school. This is fulfilling!
